AOP welcomes student representatives for 2024–2025

The AOP has welcomed its new cohort of student representatives for the 2024–2025 academic year.

Student representatives are drawn from universities across the UK to share the voice of optometry students and help shape AOP services for undergraduates.

The new student representatives include Nathesa Sivakumaran and Kitty Rose Matthews from Anglia Ruskin, Hifsah Qamar from Aston University, and Zakariya Saleem from Plymouth.

Mohammad Ismail Hussain and Nora Amoakohene represent students at Bradford University, Aneeka Rahman and Mahima Basith join from Manchester University, and Navdeep Singh Jutla and Eduard Daniel Matusa are from City, University of London.

Rita Davids, the AOP’s membership benefits officer, shared: “We are delighted to welcome our new incoming student representatives for the 2024–2025 academic year. Having a collective student voice on the issues that matter to the profession is important to the AOP.”

Bonnie Lam took on the role of AOP Councillor representing undergraduate student optometrists this June, after being a student representative in 2023–2024.

Reflecting on her role as a student representative, Lam told OT that is has been a rewarding experience, sharing: “It has been a privilege to serve my peers, amplify their voices, and work towards tangible improvements in our academic and campus life.”

“Engaging with the university and the AOP members has given me a deeper appreciation for the complexities of our industry, the educational system, and the importance of collaborative dialogue,” she continued.

Looking ahead, Lam welcomed the new AOP student reps, sharing: “I am excited about the fresh perspectives and innovative ideas they will bring.”

“This year, I look forward to fostering a strong sense of community among the reps and ensuring they feel supported in their roles. We can address ongoing challenges, enhance the student experience, and advocate for better training and education,” Lam shared. “The enthusiasm and commitment of this new group inspire confidence that we will continue to make a positive impact in the year ahead.”
