Becky Godden-Edwards: what happened to the other woman murdered by Sian O’Callaghan’s killer Christopher Halliwell

New ITV drama, A Confession, starring Martin Freeman, follows a detective searching for a missing young woman and the fallout that follows the investigation.

The story behind the series is based on real life events surrounding the death of Sian O'Callaghan and her killer Christopher Halliwell.

During the investigation it came to light that Halliwell had killed another woman years earlier - Becky Godden-Edwards.

Here is what we know about what really happened to her.

Who was Becky Godden-Edwards?

Becky Godden-Edwards was a sex worker who lived in Swindon. She was 20-years-old when she disappeared.

She was last seen alive in January 2003, when she was spotted leaving a nightclub and getting into a taxi.

Her body was found eight years later, buried in a remote field in Gloucestershire in 2011.

How is she linked to Sian O'Callaghan?

In 2011, another woman called Sian O'Callaghan, an office worker, went missing as she made her way home from a nightclub in Swindon.

She was 22. Her body was later found in Oxfordshire.

It later emerged that Christopher Halliwell, who was working as a taxi driver, had abducted her and later pleaded guilty to her murder at Bristol Crown Court. He was given a life sentence in 2012.

But During the investigation into Ms O'Callaghan's abduction and before her body had been discovered, Halliwell offered to show the detective on the case, Steve Fulcher, "another one" and - led him to where Ms Godden-Edwards' body was.

Was her killer brought to justice?

Despite Halliwell's confession, he was not originally prosecuted for Ms Godden-Edwards' murder because of errors in the way the investigating police officer had handled the case.

Mr Fulcher had not given Halliwell the chance to consult a lawyer or read him his rights, as it emerged he had thought at the time that Ms O'Callaghan could still be alive.

He faced disciplinary action over the situation, and the evidence of Halliwell leading him to Ms Godden-Edward's body was deemed inadmissible.

Eventually, detectives found another way to bring him to trial for her murder after finding further evidence.

What happened during and after the trial

A trial in 2016, which took place while Halliwell was already in prison for Ms O'Callaghan's murder, heard that he had become "besotted" with Ms Godden-Edwards. In 2003 he had had sex with her before strangling her.

It also came to light that Halliwell had visited a doctor with hand injuries shortly after Ms Godden-Edwards disappeared.

But despite leading police to where Ms Godden-Edwards' body was, Halliwell, who represented himself in court, pled not guilty to the murder of the 20-year-old, claiming his prior confession had been false.

A jury found him guilty and he was given a whole life sentence for Ms Godden-Edwards' murder, meaning he is unlikely to ever be released.

After the trial, the victim's mother, Karen Edwards, paid tribute to Mr Fulcher for bringing their "beautiful little girl" home.

She said she would "always respect him" for the decisions he made on the case, adding that he should not have faced the consequences to his career for his actions.

Detectives have not ruled out that Halliwell may have had other victims, though he is not forensically linked to any other cases.
