After Life season 3 Ricky Gervais shares what could change his mind over ending series
AFTER LIFE creator Ricky Gervais has addressed the future of the hit comedy as Netflix fans caught up with the eagerly-anticipated third season.

Before the third season arrived on Netflix on Friday, creator Ricky Gervais confirmed these six episodes would conclude the After Life story. Speaking to Express.co.uk and other press ahead of the launch, Tony Johnson star Ricky opened up on his decision to bring the most-watched British comedy to an end.

Opening up on filming the final season, Ricky said: “It was great filming it after a year of anxiety about the pandemic.

“Once we were there it went as smoothly as ever we didn't lose a minute no one tested positive it was just great.

“It's lovely to be with those people again, actors were coming in on their day off just to hang out.

“It's a lovely atmosphere, it’s a joy filming because all the hard work has been done.”

“We workshopped it and everything went smoothly,” he continued.

He shared: “When you first start you've got to explain everything to everyone, that takes a bit of time and it's hard to hide exposition, it's hard to hide things.

“You've got to tell the audience, you've got to try and make it funny and you've got to make it seep in without turning the camera and going, ‘This is what's happening.’

“But then that gets easier because they know what type of person Kath is and they know why Tony is like the way he is and they know who Lenny is.

“They know the relationships so there's less exposition, you can do it with a look, you can do it with an idea, someone can come in and say, ‘I have an idea’ and it's overly funny.

“That's why the funniest person you know, isn't a professional comedian it's your granddad or your uncle because you know them so well.

“You know everything behind every look and gesture they do it so it's the shorthand makes everything easier.”

“And you can explore, you can go further with things because you understand why they're doing it so it's a pleasure,” he continued.

“The second season of anything should be the best because it's still fresh you're still exploring, you know who you're writing for.

“The other great thing about After Life is when you first start and you write a script, you have to cast you don't know anyone, now I had cast this before I'd written it.

“I’d phoned everyone up and asked ‘Are you doing this?’ so they were on board from the beginning, workshopping it, giving it ideas.

“And so this has been the best writing-directing experience of my career because everyone made it so easy for me and everyone's so good.”

After Life seasons 1-3 are available on Netflix.
