American Airlines has recently announced a new direct flight service connecting Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) to São Paulo/Guarulhos–Governor André Franco Montoro International Airport (GRU) in Brazil. This new route will commence with a flight on September 5, 2024, coinciding with the National Football League (NFL) season opener where the Eagles will face the Packers. The return flight is scheduled for September 7, 2024.
This marks the first time American Airlines will operate a direct flight from Philadelphia to São Paulo, expanding their reach into Brazil and South America. The airline has not yet disclosed the type of aircraft to be used for the 13-hour journey, but it is anticipated that a widebody plane from their fleet will be utilized, given the length of the flight. American Airlines, known as the world’s largest airline, boasts an extensive fleet that includes 47 Boeing 777-200ERs, 20 Boeing 777-300ERs, 37 Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners, and 22 Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, as noted by ch-aviation.
The NFL, renowned for drawing significant viewership and fan travel, is expected to contribute to an uptick in air traffic for this inaugural flight.
