Matthew Vaughn has revealed it was his wife Claudia Schiffer who persuaded him to become a director.

The filmmaker, 52, previously worked as a producer and made his directorial debut with the crime film Layer Cake in 2004.

But appearing on Tuesday's episode of The One Show, Matthew revealed he may never have made the change had it not been for Claudia, 53.

He said: 'My wife persuaded me to be a director. I was a producer. She said, "direct Layer Cake" because Guy Ritchie fell out of it or left.'

The couple married in 2002 and are parents to daughters Clementine and Cosima and son Caspar.

Matthew appeared on The One Show to promote his new film Argylle alongside one of the movie's stars, John Cena.

The director told how the star-studded film celebrates women and his involvement partly came about because of his daughters.

He said: 'We watched Romancing The Stone during lockdown and the world had got pretty bleak. My daughter said, "why can't you make a movie like this?"

'There's a celebration of women in this film which we're hiding a little bit but once you have daughters, you want women to be safe and celebrated.'

Argylle also stars Henry Cavill, Bryce Dallas Howard, Sam Rockwell, Catherine O’Hara, Samuel L. Jackson, Ariana DeBose and Dua Lipa.

The plot follows the introverted spy novelist Elly as she's drawn into the real world of espionage when the plots of her books get a little too close to the activities of a sinister underground syndicate.

When Aiden (Sam Rockwell), a spy, shows up to save her from being kidnapped, Elly and her beloved cat Alfie are plunged into a covert world.

Sam's character, who has ties to the underworld through his Burgundy winery, tells Elly: 'It's time for you to meet the real agent Argylle.'

The film is described as following, 'the world's greatest spy, Argylle,' who 'gets caught up in a globe-trotting adventure'.

Argylle was first announced in June 2021, with Matthew directing from a script by Jason Fuchs, adapted from a yet-to-be-published novel by a mysterious writer named Elly Conway.

The writer seemingly hasn't published a book before, with the Argylle novel's publication originally set for September 29, 2022 and then pushed to March 29, 2023 and now apparently set for November 9, 2023.

Argylle is released in cinemas on February 2 2024.
