A good day for Australia but a great day for Usman Khawaja. What a story it has been, the resurgence of Khawaja as a force in Test cricket, and narratives don’t get much better than a century in the land of his birth. That’s his third 100 in six innings and he has the chance to go on with things when Australia resume tomorrow in a strong position.
Smith fell late for 72, misses a century again, but the damage has largely been done on day one. A good toss to win and Khawaja, Warner and Smith pile on the runs. Thanks for tuning in, see you all tomorrow.
Shaheen with the ball and will try to sneak an extra wicket for the home side right on stumps after Hasan made the breakthrough to get Smith. One ball to survive and... dropped! Very tough chance in close, went at pace and he couldn’t react in time.
Steve Smith will have to be content with 72 and that is a brilliant catch from Faheem in second slip. Little more than an over to go and Smith gets the nick and will depart. Or will he? They are just checking whether this is grounded or not as he went low and to his left. That looks fine to me, good shout, great catch.
The new ball does the damage. Smith out, Australia 3-250.
With just two down. It’s been a mixed day in terms of the tempo of the game but barring a late disaster, Australia are going to head to the first change a set or two up.
Full, fast, hint of swing from Shaheen. Maybe an inside edge but a reasonable appeal. He tries it again and Khawaja makes no mistake this time, swats it away with the wrists and it races to the fence. That’s the 150-partnership between Khawaja and Smith.
That was all over the place. Shaheen bowls, goes through to the keeper, nobody really appealed, thought they had missed the DRS timer, they did not, ball misses the bat by 10cm. Terrible cricket all round.
That’s the 80 overs up and we are about to see some express bowling. Shaheen and Hasan will get first dibs one would suspect. Shaheen it is and they need some late wickets here if those negative tactics in the middle overs are to make any sense at all. Smith on 63, Khawaja 120, Australia 2-235.
Just a few overs left until Pakistan get the fresh pill. Thank goodness. Apparently ‘things’ happen, the commentary team informs me.
It was almost a four but we’ll take an action-packed three given the leg-side spin clinic we had been treated to by Pakistan. No boundaries in 17 overs but at least the Pakistan spinners are back over the wicket and bowling balls that are hittable. It’s 2-222 with about 15 overs left in the day.
Ultra-negative tactics employed here. The umpire has seen enough there and calls that one wide. Will they intervene any further if this continues? They are stopping the runs, that much is clear, but this is ridiculous strategic move from the hosts. On day one, of all things.
