Barcelona attracts seven million tourists a year but has topped the league table

Barcelona has been ranked as the worst city in Europe for getting a good night's sleep. Sleep expertslooked at popular European cities including Berlin, Paris, Dublin, Barcelona and London.

The cities were ranked based on factors including the most visited city, average daylight hours, the percentage of population exposed to harmful noise levels, humidity levels and traffic volume. Barcelona was ranked as the worst city for a good night's sleep. It ranked highest for humidity levels (15.5 dew point), and second highest for noise with 83% of people being affected by harmful noise levels.

The second worst city to sleep in is Rome, with over 60% of the population affected by harmful noise levels. The capital also ranks second for the most amount of daylight hours and highest humidity levels. Berlin was named as the best city to sleep in, fighting for the top spot against Dublin and Brussels with just one point behind each other.

Berlin has the least amount of harmful noise with less than 30% of people affected, and a dew point of 0.6. D ublin had the lowest levels of humidity at 0 dew point and had 164 sunlight hours, the least out of all the cities. Only 30.3% of people were exposed to harmful noise levels, making Dublin a great place for a good night's sleep.

Brussels ranked as the sixth worst place for sleep, with tourist visits at 4.3 million, 201 daylight hours and 30.3% of people exposed to harmful noise levels. V ienna was ranked as the worst city for noise pollution, with 86.5% of its population exposed to harmful sound levels. Overall, Vienna fell just behind Rome, and is in joint third place with London.

London holds the top space for visitors with 19.6 million and over 67% of people affected by harmful noise levels. J ust behind London, Paris has 19.1 million visitors yearly, and over 59% of people are affected by harmful noise levels, falling at fourth place overall for the worst city to sleep in.

Lisbon and Amsterdam are joint fifth with Lisbon recording the highest amount of sunlight at 353 hours. R ebecca Swain, sleep expert from WinstonsBeds.com said “Getting a good night's sleep is so important in order to function well and live a well rounded, happy life.

“Sleep tourism is a growing trend with travellers looking to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, switch off and unwind away from home. Choosing the right city for your rejuvenating getaway is important and the European Poor Sleep Index reveals which cities are the best and worst places for a decent sleep.

“Travellers looking to focus on their sleep will want to head to Berlin, Dublin or Brussels. The adventurer might want to look at cities like Barcelona, which ranked the no.1 worst city to sleep in, and famously has lots of activities to fill your time.”
