The 22-year-old clashed with teammate Gavi after both players jumped for the same ball just past the hour mark.

Araujo received treatment on the pitch and was checked on by centre back partner Eric Garcia as well as Celta forward Iago Aspas.

In fact, it was Aspas who alerted the referee to Araujo's condition and the Spain international stayed close as he received treatment.

Ronald Araujo was taken to the hospital after this clash of heads with his teammate Pablo Gavi. Best case scenario here is mild concussion with no orbital fracture. The good news is it was reported he never lost consciousness. Head injuries need to be taken more seriously #Barca pic.twitter.com/O5QBRQZpH0

Both Araujo and Gavi initially seemed fine after the collision, but that quickly changed when the former hit the deck at the Camp Nou.

Play was stopped for eight minutes and the Uruguay international was taken away in an ambulance.

Supporters chanted "U-RU-GUAYO" as the game got back underway.

Manager Xavi has since confirmed Araujo spent the night in hospital and is out of danger, while Gavi stayed on for the full 90 minutes.

Per BBC Sport he said: "The doctor has told us he is conscious.

"He will spend the night in hospital but he is out of danger.

"The doctor said we shouldn't worry, that he will spend the night in hospital as a precaution, nothing more."

Araujo recently signed a new Barcelona contract, keeping him at the club until 2026.

Memphis Depay put Barcelona in front before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang grabbed a brace.

Aspas fired back minutes after but the home side managed to hold on and extend the gap over third-placed Sevilla to seven points.

Real Madrid have already been declared La Liga champions, but Barca look on course to finish second after spending a big chunk of the season outside of the top four.

They return to action on Sunday afternoon away to Getafe.
