Bayer Leverkusen have the chance to equal a stunning record this weekend.

Back in October 2022, former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso was hired by Leverkusen to replace Gerardo Seoane with the club sitting second from bottom after eight matches.

Since then, the Spaniard has completely transformed the club’s fortunes.

This season, Alonso’s men have already wrapped up the Bundesliga title and have remained unbeaten so far.

Heading into the latest match weekend, Leverkusen have the chance to equal a stunning record currently held by Portuguese side Benfica.

Benfica recorded an unbeaten streak of 48 matches from 1963 to 1965, which is the longest run since the introduction of UEFA club competitions in 1955/1956.

Leverkusen have so far gone 47 matches unbeaten and could equal Benfica’s record when they take on Eintracht Frankfurt this weekend.

Alonso’s team will then have the chance to break the record against Roma in the second leg of their Europa League semi-final tie.

Due to his impressive work with Leverkusen, Alonso has attracted interest from former clubs Liverpool and Bayern Munich, who are both looking for new managers ahead of the summer.

However, Alonso confirmed last month that he will be staying with Leverkusen.

He said: “I had a good meeting with Bayer Leverkusen, and I informed them that I will stay and continue at the club.

“After a lot of talks about my future, I used the break to reflect and make my decision. This is the place for me.”

Alonso added: There were many reasons [for deciding to start at the club]. After one year, we're building a team, we're building a great spirit here.

“There were many reasons and so many players. The season has been great so far, and for sure we want to keep having this thing together.”
