BBC Breakfast star Naga Munchetty reacts as new presenter joins BBC team

Naga Munchetty has welcomed BBC Breakfast's newest team member with a gushy tribute post.

The 47-year-old newsreader re-shared an announcement confirming the appointment of Chris Mason - who will be the BBC's next Political Editor.

It was revealed on the BBC News Press Team's official page that Chris would be stepping into his role in May after the local elections had taken place across the UK.

The post read: "Delighted to announce the appointment of @ChrisMasonBBC as the BBC's new Political Editor.

"Chris will take up his post in May after the local elections."

Showing her new co-star some support, Naga re-shared the announcement, adding: "Excellent news @ChrisMasonBBC."

Chris has worked as a BBC journalist for over twenty years and is the current host of Radio 4's Any Questions? programme.

Speaking about his new position, the Yorkshire-born star said: "What a tremendous privilege to take on what, for me, is the most extraordinary job in British broadcasting and journalism.

"I clamber upon the shoulders of giants like Laura, Nick [Robinson] and Andrew [Marr] with a smattering of trepidation and a shedload of excitement and enthusiasm.

"To lead the best team of journalists in the business on the best news patch of the lot is something I'd never even dared dream of. I can't wait to get started."

The 41-year-old is set to take over the reigns from Laura Kuenssberg who announced she would be stepping down from the role at Easter.

It is believed Laura will remain at the broadcasting giant but taking a side-step into "a senior presenting and reporting role" instead.

Laura became the first female to hold the position of the Political Editor in 2015 and has endured many successes at the cooperation during her career - including Brexit, two general elections and the Covid-19 pandemic.

The TV star explained it had been "incredible to occupy the chair during a time of such huge change" in British politics.

Meanwhile, fans of the BBC Breakfast are still awaiting news of who could fill in for host Dan Walker who quit the programme for Channel 5.

Dan has often been replaced on the show by Jon Kay, when absent - but a major shake-up could be in store, and nothing is guaranteed as to who will step up.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays on BBC One from 6am.
