United States Cheltenham Ladies Day is no more – and racegoers are baffled by replacement name
Racing fans have been baffled by the replacement for Cheltenham’s much-loved Ladies Day.
The second day of the Festival has traditionally doubled as a fashion show with female racegoers donning high-end frocks and headwear. However, amid changing times, Cheltenham stopped marketing Ladies Day back in 2018.
The second day of the Festival now goes by a new name – Style Wednesday, which celebrates so-called ‘slow fashion’ where outfits from charity shops and online resellers are encouraged. The gender-neutral day is now as much about men, who are free to enter the best-dressed competition, which will be judged by model Rosie Tapner, stylist Gabriella Baker and Love Island contestant Chris Hughes.

A Cheltenham spokesperson, via the Telegraph, said: “This year, we relaunched day two of The Festival as Style Wednesday to celebrate ‘fast horses, slow fashion’, encouraging racegoers to make more sustainable fashion choices, showcasing their unique and personal style, and to share the stories behind their amazing outfits with friends, family and on social media.”
However, the change has seen Cheltenham officials accused of going “woke” while many fans have blasted the decision. One said: “I see Ladies Day at the Cheltenham festival has been changed to Style Wednesday, another tradition has bitten the dust! Why change it? It is fun and everyone loves it. Style Wednesday, no no and no from me!”

Another blasted: “Cheltenham race meeting officials have gone totally woke. Ladies Day has been scrapped & renamed Style Day. Publish the names of these idiotic morons who changed the name.”
A third fumed: “Ladies day at Cheltenham races changed to Style Wednesday to be more gender neutral. The world has definitely gone nuts.”
A fourth added: “I have just heard the ‘ladies day’ at the Cheltenham festival is no more. Obviously it is far too offensive to have a day for ladies, as we don’t exist anymore! It is now called ‘Style Wednesday!”
