A group of around 10 youths were spotted swinging on neighbours' gates and lobbing eggs at windows on Chester Road in Helsby last night (Wednesday, March 25) during the coronavirus lockdown.

Residents have voiced their anxieties and distress on social media with one mum saying her child who has autism was left 'distraught'.

The youngsters were seen wreaking havoc in the area at around 8.30pm by residents who made numerous calls to Cheshire police.

Local mum Lisa Carter told Cheshire Live: "Myself and my family had settled down for the evening when out of the blue a horrendous bang happened on the front window which alarmed all of the family."

She ran to the front window and found it was covered in egg.

The mum then rushed to comfort her crying five-year-old before ringing police.

A next door neighbour overheard the commotion and spotted a gang of young people swinging off both sets of gates on their driveway.

Mrs Carter continued: "The children were nowhere to be seen after this but it left my five-year-old son scared and unable to return back to bed."

Lisa reported the antisocial behaviour to the police who told her they had received numerous calls and that officers were dealing with the incident.

The distressed mum said: "It is very disappointing under the current climate of social distancing and that their parents have allowed them out."

Cheshire police have provided a statement in relation to the incident.

It reads: "From around 8.45pm on Wednesday, March 25, police received reports of a large group of young people throwing eggs at homes and shops and kicking over bins in the Helsby area.

"Officers attended and conducted a search of the area but were unable to find the group.

"Enquiries in relation to the incidents are ongoing.

"Anyone with any information or CCTV or dashcam footage regarding the incidents should call Cheshire Constabulary on 101, quoting IML 668540, or give the details via the website. "
