The Chris Hoy cancer symptom that gets overlooked as wife sums
The six-time Olympic champion has only between two and four years to live with wife Lady Sarra Hoy dubbing him a 'real life superhero'

The news that Chris Hoy's cancer is terminal has shocked the UK with the cycling icon being hailed for his honesty. The Edinburgh-born legend revealed at the weekend he only had between two and four years to live after being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

His story has prompted thousands of men to reach out and get checked themselves for the disease. And one doctor reckons there is a symptom of prostate cancer Sir Chris, 48, spoke about that often goes ignored.

The six-time Olympic champion initially visited his doctor with a pain in his shoulder he had thought was a gym injury. TikToker Dr Ahmed said that is often the "first presenting complaint" but many men, like Sir Chris, assume it is something else.

Other early signs include back pain and swollen lymph nodes. However, like shoulder pain, this would mean the cancer has already spread to other parts of the body. This was what happened in Sir Chris's case and he found the disease had spread to his bones.

More common early signs revolve around the urinary tract. The need to pee more often as well as blood in the urine can also be signs of prostate cancer, as can waking up frequently in the middle of the night needing to pee. These symptoms are often ignored, especially in young men.

Abdominal pain, the constant feeling of needing to empty your bowels or bladder, unexpected weight loss and "any new constipation", are also signs, according to Dr Ahmed, who said cancer in young people is becoming more common. He added: "Like all cancers, the earlier we catch it, the more it's curable. For example, if we catch prostate cancer at an early stage, almost all men will be fully cured."

Sir Chris Hoy won six Olympic golds during a glittering career

It comes as Sir Chris's wife hailed her husband for speaking out. Lady Sarra Hoy, who is also dealing with a devastating diagnosis of her own having found out she has an aggressive form of multiple sclerosis, said he is a "real life superhero" in an emotional Instagram post.

The 40-year-old, who has been married to Sir Chris for 14 years, shared a photo of the pair on holiday and said messages of support have been "like a soothing balm to the soul". She wrote: "Completely overwhelmed by your kind, thoughtful and helpful messages.

"Many people say they don’t know what to say – that’s ok, you don’t need to have the words – just taking the time to message has been like a soothing balm to the soul. Thank you. I’ve been told that men seeking advice about prostate cancer is up seven fold and that Chris’s story is likely to save countless lives. This takes my breath away.
