Legendary former Man Utd CEO names his three top Red Devils ...

DAVID GILL has named his top three signings as Manchester United CEO.

However, there was no place for five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo in the list of best transfers.

Gill spent 16 years with United between 1997 and 2013 after first arriving as finance director.

He later became CEO in 2003, overseeing five league titles and a Champions League triumph before stepping down after a decade.

In an appearance on Rio Ferdinand's Vibe with Five podcast, he was asked to name the top three signings whilst he was United CEO.

Gill explained: "The top three signings, I would say, would be Wayne (Rooney) in terms of what he did for the club.

"I would say Michael Carrick for what he brought in terms of all that. And the third I would say, well I can have two. There’s a lot. Vidic and Evra."

He also highlighted the contributions of Edwin van der Sar, adding: "But I think in terms of the importance to the club, one of the most important ones was Edwin.

"We struggled to replace Peter (Schmeichel) and then we went out and got Edwin and he was great for us."

Rooney, Carrick, Vidic and Evra all formed a key part of Sir Alex Ferguson's dominant United side of the late 2000s.

Under the legendary boss, the Red Devils won three consecutive league titles and the Champions League.

Vidic and Evra were both bought during the January transfer window in 2006 for a combined £12.5million.

Meanwhile, Carrick arrived from Tottenham later that year for an initial £14million, going on to make 464 appearances.

As for Rooney, he is the club's all-time leading goalscorer after scoring 253 times following a £27million move from Everton in 2004.

There was no place in the top three for Ronaldo, though, who joined from Sporting Lisbon in 2003, a month before Gill officially became CEO.

The Portuguese forward scored 118 goals and won his first Ballon d'Or during his first spell at Old Trafford.

He completed a then world record £80million move to Real Madrid in the summer of 2009.

Despite not making Gill's top three, Ronaldo was named United's eighth best signing of all-time by FourFourTwo in November.

Rooney ranked ahead of him in fourth with Bryan Robson revealed as the club's best ever signing.

Denis Law and Eric Cantona completed the top three, with Vidic, Evra, Carrick and Van der Sar all in the top 20.
