Davina McCalls dig at talent shows as she explains why everyone loves The Masked Singer
Ahead of the return of The Masked Singer, Davina McCall discussed why viewers are so fond of the competition

Davina McCall has made a sly dig at rival television shows as she explained why The Masked Singer is so loved by viewers.

The TV presenter is a judge on the ITV series which sees famous faces disguised in colourful costumes as the panel and fans at home try to uncover their true identity from their singing voices.

Davina explained that viewers prefer this format of traditional singing contests as there is 'no disappointment or upset'.

Speaking to The Sun, the 54-year-old explained: "I think the really nice thing about having a guessing show is that it’s not a talent contest.

"A talent contest at some point has disappointment and real upset at the end of it. Whereas with our show, an unmasking is a celebration."

She continued: "Even though it means the singer isn’t going any further, it’s still like, ‘Who is it?’ It’s just the most exciting thing ever."

The judges for the next season of The Masked Singer was recently confirmed, with Rita Ora, Mo Gilligan, Davina, Jonathan Ross, and Joel Dommett gracing our screens.

Rita recently said she can't wait to be back with her "family" ahead of the new series and is looking forward to being back on the show, which will see a number of stars compete under elaborate costumes.

Speaking ahead of the new series, she said: "It's amazing. Every single time I come back I’m like 'oh the family!'

"Me and Davina were saying that we just love working together and it’s just such a great energy and I just love doing this show so much.

"What I think is so great about this show is that that are so many crowd-pleasers and sometimes people might mess up the lyrics but it doesn’t matter because it’s not a singing competition. It’s a game show."

Meanwhile, Davina and host Joel recently discussed how quirky television shows have 'changed TV'.

The ITV talent show had raked in 10 million viewers for the final earlier this year by keeping fans guessing right up until singer Joss Stone won as Sausage.

Joel said: “It’s not just a success, it’s a cultural reference, which I think is the dream – to become a show everyone talks about.

“I think it’s changed the landscape of Saturday night TV.”

“The nice thing about having a guessing show is that it’s not a talent contest,” Davina added.
