Douglas Ross branded lightweight by Tory Cabinet minister after he calls for Boris Johnson to resign
Leader of the House of Commons Jacob Rees-Mogg slammed the MP and MSP after he broke cover to call for the Prime Minister to quit.

Douglas Ross has been branded "lightweight" after the Scottish Tory leader called for Boris Johnson to resign over his attendance at a lockdown party in May 2020.

Leader of the House of Commons Jacob Rees-Mogg slammed the MP and MSP after he broke cover to call for the Prime Minister to quit.

The PM is facing calls to resign from all sides, however Scottish Secretary Alister Jack is backing Johnson which goes against the majority of the Scots MSPs who also called for him to go.

Speaking on Newsnight on Wednesday evening Rees-Mogg dismissed the importance of Ross as he backed Johnson to get through the crisis engulfing his government.

Host Kirsty Wark asked Rees-Mogg: "We've been told every single Scottish Tory MSP, that's 31 of them.

"The people that you depend on to hold up the union think that Boris Johnson should quit, that I would suggest you as a very serious matter."

Rees-Mogg replied: "The Secretary of State for Scotland who is a big figure is very supportive of the Prime Minister.

"Douglas Ross has always been quite a lightweight figure."

Wark replied in astonishment at the comments from Rees-Mogg towards Ross.

Nearly all Tory MSPs in the Scottish Parliament have backed their leader publicly with many urging Boris Johnson to quit after admitting attending the party on May 20, 2020.

On the BBC's Good Morning Scotland show former Tory MSP Professor Adam Tomkins hit back at Rees-Mogg.

He said: "Douglas Ross is a man of principle.

"He was the only Minister to resign from Boris Johnson's government over the Dominic Cummings affair a year and a half ago.

"He's now the only Scottish Conservative leader to call for the resignation of the UK conservative leader.

"He's a man of steel and principle.

"I think he's got this absolutely right. The Prime Minister's position is untenable. The Prime Minister's position is indefensible, and he's got to go."
