What and when is Galentine's Day as Parks and Recreation holiday lives on

Galentine's Day continues to celebrated every February 13 even as seven years have passed since the beloved US show Parks and Recreation went off air.

The made-up holiday turned real celebrates the bonds of female friendship as popularised by the popular mockumentary programme.

Created by SNL's Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation aired from 2009 to 2015 and satirised the life of small-town bureaucrat Leslie Knope and her coworkers in Pawnee, Indiana.

You might've heard a thing or two about the holiday since the show's 'Galentine's Day' episode aired back in 2010.

In the show, Leslie explains she created the holiday to celebrate her female friendships.

When is Galentine's Day you ask?

The holiday created by Parks and Rec lead Leslie Knope falls on February 13, a day before Valentine's Day.

Leslie throws a brunch and showers her friends with presents every Valentine's Day eve.

"Every February 13, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style," she says.

"Ladies celebrating ladies. It's like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas."

She gifts friends and colleagues Ann Perkins, April Ludgate and Donna Meagle, as well as her mum, a gift bag with a bouquet of hand-crocheted flower pens and a mosaic portrait of each pal crafted from the crushed bottles of their favourite soda.

Then in true Leslie Knope fashion, she goes as far as writing each friend a 5,000 word essay on why they are 'so awesome'.

She certainly sets the bar, but perhaps sending off a thoughtful message or finally seeing a friend you've been meaning to meet up with will do just as well this Galentine's Day.
