Notre Dame takes steps to prevent heat illness among fans heading to Friday pro soccer match in ND Stadium

SOUTH BEND — With dangerously high temperatures forecast across the region into the weekend, the University of Notre Dame has announced some steps designed to keep safe fans who will be on campus for Friday night’s professional soccer match in Notre Dame Stadium.

The match between Liverpool F.C. and Borussia Dortmund is scheduled for 8 p.m.

The university announced:

Fans will be permitted to carry unopened, sealed water bottles into the football stadium. (Opened bottles of any kind or other drinking containers will not be permitted.)

In addition to water for purchase, water filling stations and water fountains will be available throughout the stadium concourse.

The Joyce Center, just east of the football stadium, will be open until 8:30 p.m. Friday (Gates 1, 2, & 9) for guests needing access to restrooms and water fountains.

In addition, the university is encouraging fans to take the following precautions:

* Drink plenty of water

* Wear a brimmed hat and loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing

* When feeling too warm, find a cool, shaded, well-ventilated area in which to rest

* In the sun, wear sunscreen

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for the entire region into Saturday.

Campus parking will offer pay-to-park parking starting at 5 p.m. Friday. Stadium gates will open at 6 p.m. and the game starts at 8 p.m.

Fans will be required to go through metal detectors before entering the stadium.

A clear-bag policy will be in effect in the stadium. Any clutch or wallet larger than 4 and a half inches by 6 and a half inches must be clear plastic, vinyl or PVC material. (Exceptions will be made for approved medical bags or equipment.)
