James Van Der Beek, who found fame as Dawson Leery in the US teen drama series Dawson's Creek, has said he has been diagnosed with colorectal (bowel) cancer

James Van Der Beek, best known for his role as Dawson Leery in the hit US teen drama series 'Dawson's Creek', has announced that he has been diagnosed with bowel cancer. Despite the diagnosis, the 47 year old actor expressed optimism and said he was "feeling good" during an interview with US outlet People.

Van Der Beek is set to appear in a US Fox special called 'The Real Full Monty', a show based on the 1997 British film where male celebrities strip down to raise awareness for cancer research. He told People: "I have colorectal cancer, I've been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family. There's reason for optimism, and I'm feeling good."

He also mentioned prioritising time with his wife Kimberly Van Der Beek and their six children Olivia, Joshua, Annabel, Emilia, Gwendolyn and Jeremiah.

Bowel cancer, which can develop in the rectum or colon, is one of the most common types of cancer in the UK, according to Cancer Research UK. The charity explains that it is sometimes referred to as colorectal cancer because it affects the large bowel, which includes the colon and rectum.

The bowel forms part of the digestive system and is divided into the small and large bowel, reports the Mirror. The large bowel includes:

  • colon
  • back passage (rectum)
  • bowel opening (anus)

Bowel cancer, a condition that affects both men and women, is more prevalent in older individuals. The likelihood of developing this disease hinges on numerous factors such as age, family history, genetic conditions like familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), Lynch syndrome, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, as well as diet and lifestyle choices.

Main symptoms of bowel (colorectal) cancer

According to the NHS, symptoms of bowel cancer may include:

  • changes in your poo, such as having softer poo, diarrhoea or constipation that is not usual for you
  • needing to poo more or less often than usual for you
  • blood in your poo, which may look red or black
  • bleeding from your bottom
  • often feeling like you need to poo, even if you've just been to the toilet
  • tummy pain
  • a lump in your tummy
  • bloating
  • losing weight without trying
  • feeling very tired for no reason

According to the NHS, symptoms of bowel cancer may include anaemia, which can result in extreme fatigue, breathlessness, and headaches.

While these symptoms are common and could be indicative of other conditions, it's crucial to consult with a GP if they persist. Early detection of cancer, if present, can significantly improve treatment outcomes.
