What Happened To Jennifer Pan After Being Convicted Of Her
Pan is the subject of Netflix's What Jennifer Did.

Summary

  • Jennifer Pan was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for plotting her parents' murders.
  • Pan is serving her sentence at Grand Valley Institution for Women, maintaining her innocence.
  • Pan has been granted a retiral regarding her first-degree murder conviction.

What Jennifer Did chronicles how Jennifer Pan conspired to murder her parents and was later convicted of her crimes, but after watching the film, some may wonder what happened to Pan following her trial. The 2024 Netflix true crime documentary features footage of Pan's interrogations by police in the hours and days following the murder of her mother, Bich Ha Pan, and the attempted murder of her father, Huei Hann Pan. The movie also incorporates interviews with people involved in the surprising and horrific case, including Detective Bill Courtice, Detective Alan Cooke, and Nam Nguyen, one of Pan's school friends.

On November 8, 2010, Pan left the front door to the house she shared with her parents in Markham, Ontario, Canada, unlocked before heading to bed. Then, three men entered the home under the guise of a robbery, but they shot Bich Ha and Huei Hann. To make it look as if she was innocent and had nothing to do with the crimes, Pan later claimed that the men tied her to the banister. However, Pan called the police, and while her mother was dead on the scene, her father was taken to the hospital and survived his gunshot wounds.

Pan's Mother Died, But Her Father Survived

At first, the Ontario police had no reason to suspect that Jennifer Pan had anything to do with the attack on Bich Ha and Huei Hann Pan, as shown in her first interviews in What Jennifer Did on Netflix. However, as time continued, they learned some information about Pan that led them to believe she might have been an accomplice. Consequently, the detectives on the case began treating Pan as a suspect and uncovered numerous holes in her story.

Growing up, Pan lied a lot to her parents as she felt they expected much more from her than was reasonable. For example, Pan told her father and mother that she was attending college when she wasn't, and she lied about dating Daniel Wong. Once the police were informed of Pan's secret relationship with Wong, they knew that they had to consider that she might have been involved in the murder of her mother and the attempted murder of her father. Plus, once Huei Hann Pan woke up from his coma, he had some information implicating his daughter.

[Jennifer Pan] is unable to speak to or see her family since they filed a request for a lifetime non-communication order, which was granted and prohibits Pan from contacting her father or her brother, Felix.

According to Decider, Huei Hann Pan told the police from his hospital bed, "Find out what Jennifer did," hence the title of the true crime documentary on Netflix. He recalled seeing his daughter speak with the hitmen after he had been shot, so the detectives arrested Jennifer Pan on November 22, just 14 days after the murder. The police deduced that Pan was fed up with the lies to her father and mother, so she hired someone to kill her parents. Pan was eventually found guilty of first-degree murder and attempted murder, resulting in a life sentence in prison.

Fourteen years following her arrest and almost ten years after her conviction, Jennifer Pan resides at the Grand Valley Institution for Women in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. She is unable to speak to or see her family since they filed a request for a lifetime non-communication order, which was granted and prohibits Pan from contacting her father or her brother, Felix. Additionally, as the Netflix true documentary shows after telling the horrific story of the attack on Bich Ha and Huei Hann Pan, Jennifer Pan maintains that she is innocent to this day.

Jennifer Pan's trial began in March 2014 and ran for ten months before the jury served Pan a guilty verdict on two counts — first-degree murder (leading to a life sentence without the possibility of parole), and attempted murder (resulting in a concurrent life sentence).

Jennifer Pan Received A Retrial In 2023 (But Her Attempted Murder Conviction Was Upheld)

Pan Asked For An Appeal

In May 2023, the Ontario Appeal Court granted Jennifer Pan (and her co-conspirators) a retrial in the murder of her mother. Per Business Insider, the judge in Pan's first trial interfered with the jury by limiting their accessibility to consider other possible outcomes for Pan's verdict (like manslaughter of second-degree murder instead of first-degree murder). Consequently, as What Jennifer Did revealed, a retrial for the charges related to Bich Ha Pan's killing was ordered, but the new trial has yet to begin. Meanwhile, Pan's conviction regarding the attempted murder of Huei Hann Pan was upheld and won't be retried.
