Joe Root is now the eighth most prolific batsman in the history of Test cricket after moving ahead of Shivnarine Chanderpaul on Sunday.

Root passed Chanderpaul's career total of 11,869 runs moments after registering his 94th Test half-century for England.

The 33-year-old Yorkshireman later went on to make the 32nd Test century of his career, before eventually being dismissed for 122. 

Root's latest big knock came against Chanderpaul's old side as England set the West Indies a target of 385 to win the second Test at Trent Bridge.

Chanderpaul scored 11,867 runs in 280 Test innings between 1994 and 2015.

Meanwhile, Sunday's outing with the bat for Root was his 260th innings in Test cricket and saw him make his way up to 11,940 runs.

The next batsman ahead of Root in the all-time rankings is another West Indies icon in the form of Brian Lara.

Lara scored 11,953 runs in 232 innings between 1990 and 2006.

India legend Sachin Tendulkar looks set to hold onto top spot for a long while yet with his tally of 15,921 runs.

Root is the only player in the top 10 that is still active.

Australia's Steve Smith - who is also still playing - is currently 15th with 9,685 runs.
