Barton has landed another job in League One as he continues his fledgling managerial career

Former Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton has been named as the new manager of Bristol Rovers.

Barton, who spent four seasons on Tyneside as a player, is back in management having left Fleetwood Town last month.

The 38-year-old guided Fleetwood to the League One play-offs last term but was dismissed last month after two-and-a-half years at the helm at Highbury Stadium.

However, he is now back in management with another League One outfit as he looks to steer the Pirates away from relegation trouble.

“We are delighted to welcome Joey to Bristol Rovers and look forward to working closely with him to progress our football club forward," Rovers' club president Wael Al Qadi told the club's official website.

"Joey's experience in the game is matched by his passion for coaching and delivering results, which made him a standout candidate for the role.

"He's got a good knowledge of the league already thanks to his spell at Fleetwood and has shown his credentials at delivering results and getting the best out of the players he works with.

"We are confident that he will be able to continue the ongoing development of the younger players coming through the ranks at the Club and speaking to him, I know his ambitions align with what we want to achieve as a football club.

"I want to wish Joey, the staff and the players the very best of luck for the coming games, as we look to cement our safety in Sky Bet League One and build for the future."

Barton has brought Clint Hill and Andy Mangan with him, with the duo set to step into roles as Assistant Manager and First Team coach respectively.

The former Manchester City, Marseille, QPR, Rangers and Burnley midfielder will take charge of his side for the first time on Tuesday evening when they welcome Wigan Athletic to the Memorial Stadium.

Bristol Rovers will welcome Sunderland to the South West next month as Barton will look to maintain his unbeaten record as a manager against the Black Cats on Saturday, March 27.
