Beyond Paradise star Kris Marshall is back for a second series on BBC One, however the actor has revealed that the drama isn't just filmed in Devon - where Shipton Abbott is set

BBC One's Beyond Paradise is returning with our screens, with detective Humphrey and the gang keeping the seaside streets of Devon crime-free in series two. Yet despite the picturesque landscapes featured in the show, star Kris Marshall has admitted that Beyond Paradise is not always filmed in Devon.

The series is set in the fiction town of Shipton Abbott, however Kris, 50, revealed that some scenes are actually shot in Cornwall. "We film on both sides of the River Tamar,” he said. “I’m from the South West so I’m biased, but I think it’s one of the best places on Earth.

The River Tamar runs along the border between Devon and Cornwall, with filming taking place either side. However, much of the filming for series one taking place in Looe - a harbour town in southeast Cornwall.

Speaking about filming in the South West, Felicity Montagu, who plays Margo Martins, revealed that the locals love having the cast and crew in town.

"We get to know the locals and their extensive family,” she said. "It’s quite extraordinary. There’s a bit of moaning sometimes.

"But I think generally speaking, they’re happy. I mean I went to the fishmonger’s while we were filming and he said, ‘Can you personally thank the producers because our business has escalated.’ And I’m thrilled that’s happened.

"It helps when we have a few sunny days,” she continued. "I love to swim in the sea at Looe."

Meanwhile, Zahra Ahmadi - who plays Esther Williams - said that many of the cast and crew would take to the sea after a hard day of work. "I only swim in the Mediterranean,” laughed Zahra. "But loads of the crew and the cast are sea-swimming, even outside of summer."

Earlier this year, Kris opened up about feeling a "certain amount of trepidation" ahead of Beyond Paradise returning. "It's the first time I've done it, but when you do a spin-off of a show, and one as successful as Death In Paradise, there's a certain amount of trepidation," he said.

"I really hope this works out well. If it works out badly, it's not a great look for me."

As for whether he preferred to hot climes of the Caribbean or the seaside beauty of the South East, Kris said that he enjoys filming in both. "I'm all about the sea.

"You get in the sea in the Caribbean and it's like a bath. It's wonderfully warm and beautiful, but there are sharks in it," he added.

"You get in the sea in Cornwall, it's a bit colder, it's still really refreshing, and there's no sharks.

Beyond Paradise airs Friday 29th March at 8pm on BBC One.
