Unveiled for CES 2022, LG’s 2022 TV range ushers in a number of firsts, including the brand’s first 42-inch and 83-inch OLED models, wider use of its EVO panel technology, and an all-new gen 5 Alpha 9 processor.

Evo glass, a big talking point in 2021, will be included on both its flagship G2 series and C2 models. The former getting a brighter iteration, courtesy of Brightness Boosting technology, the latter using trickled down tech from last year’s G1.

Brightness Boosting enables G2 series TVs to deliver greater brightness through improved heat dissipation.

There’s no change to the LG’s screen hierarchy for 2022. The brand will sell four 4k OLED variants: the G2, C2, B2 and A2 models, plus a Z2 8k offering.

The range-topping G2 series introduces a the second new OLED screen size, at 83-inches, as well as the world’s first 97-incher if that’s too small, to complement 55-, 65- and 77-inch screens.

LG’s C2 series will come in six screen sizes for 2022: 42-, 48-, 55-, 65-, 77-, and 83-inches. The B2 models will come in 55-, 65- and 75-inch screen sizes, while the cheaper A2 screens will be available in 48-, 55-, 65- and 77-inch versions.

The Z2 8k model will come in 77- and 88-inch screen sizes.

Both the G2 and C2 feature LG’s new Alpha 9 Gen 5 intelligent processor, while the B2 and A2 feature an Alpha 7 Gen 5 chipset.

The new Alpha 9 Gen 5 uses deep learning to enhance its upscaling performance, and introduces a number of tricks to boost image clarity, including AI object enhancement, which makes foreground and background elements more distinct from one another.

LG has also tightened up its upscaling algorithm, supposedly to remove noise, and has improved HDR tone mapping. The screens will now be able to determine both genre and scene information, and boast far greater analytical capability.

The Gen 5 silicon also expands the range of LG’s AI Sound Pro processing, to provide viewers with more lifelike audio, in the form of virtualised 7.1.2.

All four HDMI inputs on this year’s principal fleet will accept a 4k 120Hz input. The brand has also opened up its HDMI ports to accept full fat 48Gbps bandwidth.

Finally, Mini LED will also get more love in 2022, as part of an expanded QNED TV lineup. The Quantum Dot NanoCell models start from the QNED 90 Series.
