Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool begin their 2021-22 FA Cup adventure with a Third Round home tie against League One mid-table side Shrewsbury Town at Anfield

Liverpool will kick-off their FA Cup campaign by hosting League One side Shrewsbury Town in the Third Round at Anfield on Sunday.

The Reds had their Carabao Cup semi-final first leg tie away to Arsenalpostponed on Thursday due to a high number of positive Covid-19 cases at the club, although it is hoped that the situation may have improved in time for Sunday.

Shrewsbury are currently 14th in League One and will be looking to cause a huge upset when they travel to Merseyside, having already defeated Stratford Town and Carlisle United in the previous two rounds.

Yet this will be the Shrews’ second time in as many years that they have faced the Reds in this competition, after they were drawn against their Premier League opponents in the Fourth Round in 2019-20.

Should Jurgen Klopp’s side overcome the worst of their Covid-19 outbreak, it can be expected that a much changed side from the one that faced Chelsea a week ago will be put out to take on Steve Cotterill’s team.

Team news

Jurgen Klopp was set to be without an incredible 11 players for Liverpool’s Carabao Cup clash with Arsenal on Thursday, and it is unsure as to how many he will be without for the visit of Shrewsbury, although Andrew Robertson will return from his suspension.

Takumi Minamino (muscular) could make his return, but Nathaniel Phillips (head), Divock Origi (knee), Thiago (hip) and Harvey Elliott (ankle) are all still sidelined.

Alisson, Joel Matip and Roberto Firmino have all tested positive for Covid-19, while Mohamed Salah (Egypt), Sadio Mane (Senegal) and Naby Keita (Guinea) have now left for AFCON 2021.

Shrewsbury could see Khanya Leshabela (Covid-19) return on Sunday, while eighteen-year-old Tom Bloxham is available again following a suspension.

Aaron Pierre could return to the starting XI after featuring on the bench after his bout of Covid-19, and new loan signing from Bristol City, Saikou Janneh, could make his debut for the club.
