Luis Enrique is Cristiano Ronaldo's pick to take on the Man Utd job following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's dismissal but the current Spain boss has been quick to make his feelings clear

Luis Enrique has rubbished reports that he could take over at Manchester United following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's dismissal.

The Norwegian was sacked on Sunday morning after he'd seen his side lost 4-1 at Watford.

It was the latest defeat in a long line of poor results that has seen United slip out of the top four.

Cristiano Ronaldo was one of three signings made by Solskjaer in the summer, but he has been unable to take the team forward.

The Old Trafford hierarchy are now looking for a new manager having placed Michael Carrick in charge initially.

Enrique, now in charge of Spain and formerly a Champions League winner at Barcelona, is reportedly the pick of Ronaldo.

The 51-year-old was quizzed on the possibility of taking over in Manchester but responded by telling La Sexta: "Is it April Fools' Day today?"

He also added: “I’m already in the biggest team in Spain with 5,000 players.”

Enrique recently led his country to the semi-finals of Euro 2020, before being knocked out by Italy on penalties.

United are seeking an interim boss to see them through until the end of the season before making a permanent appointment in the summer.

Zinedine Zidane is among the favourites to take over and is highly thought of among the United's top brass.

He has been out of work since leaving Real Madrid in the summer but has shown no interest in the Old Trafford hotseat with his sights set on a job in his homeland.

Ajax's Erik ten Hag and Brendan Rodgers have also been linked with the job.

The Leicester boss recently distanced himself from the role and his previous Liverpool association coupled with his results this term has divided opinion among United fans.

Solskjaer has broken his silence following his sacking and claimed he is proud of the work he's done since initially taking over as interim boss back in December 2018.

He said: "I’m going to leave by the front door, because I think everyone knows I’ve given everything for this club.

"This club means everything to me and together we’re a good match, but unfortunately I couldn’t get the results we needed and it’s time for me to step aside.

Solskjaer continued: "First of all, I want to thank the board and the owners for giving me the opportunity because it’s not for everyone and I’ve had the opportunity.

"I’m so honoured and privileged to have been trusted to take the club forward, and I really hope that I leave it in a better state than when I came."
