Madison Keys was leading 5-1 in the third set against world No 7 Jasmine Paolini before retiring from the match.

American tennis star Madison Keys was in tears as she left the court after retiring from her match against Jasmine Paolini due to injury.

Paolini took the early advantage in the match by winning the first set, but Keys battled back in a pulsating contest in the second.

The 29-year-old edged out a tight tiebreak to force a deciding set and she took that momentum into the third set.

Keys pushed to within just one game of progressing to the quarter-finals as she took an incredible 5-2 lead with a double break.

Keys pulled up with an injury that opened the door for Paolini to get back into the match.

She needed medical attention from the physio at one stage and left the court to undergo further treatment.

But Keys was clearly still limping as she returned to the court with Paolini unrelenting in getting back on level terms.

Paolini got the set back to 5-5 and hit an ace down the middle with an emotional Keys then walking towards the umpire's chair to announce she was withdrawing.

The 2017 US Open finalist was in tears as she walked to the net to shake hands with Paolini applauding her opponent as she walked off the court.

"I'm very sorry for her. It's sad. Really good match," Paolini said.

"Really tough, lots of up and downs. I feel a bit happy but also sad for her because it's not easy to win like that. I hope you enjoyed the match.

"Rollercoaster. I started really well and was really focused on court but she's a great player and she raised her level so it was tough to return balls.

"I was repeating to stay in there, you never know in tennis. At the end somehow, I know she retired, but I'm here with the win.

"I hope so. I love this court. Thank you for the support and for all the Italians that are here there are so many. I'm enjoying it a lot."
