The former Barcelona manager was asked about links earlier.

It was announced on Sunday morning that the Premier League side had parted ways with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following their woeful 4-1 defeat to Watford at Vicarage Road, with Michael Carrick set to take over on a part-time basis.

In recent hours, several high-profile names have been linked with the role, including former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane, who is the bookies favourite after The Glazer family instructed club officials to try and persuade him to take over mid-season.

Luis Enrique has also been linked with the role. In fact, Cristiano Ronaldo wants the former Barcelona manager to become the new manager at Old Trafford, according to Sky Sports, who claim United are expected to consider him as a possible replacement.

Ronaldo, who joined his former club in the summer, believes Enrique is the right calibre of coach to take United forward and compete against the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea. So how does the 51-year-old feel about it all?

It appears the former Barcelona manager is not planning to leave Spain right now. In fact, he asked if today was April Fools' Day after being asked about links by Spanish publication La Sexta.

Well, that's one way to dismiss those rumours.

Enrique is understood to be 'so happy' in his current job with the national team, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, which plays down those earlier reports suggesting Enrique would be interested in talking to officials about the vacancy.

United confirmed on Sunday that Solskjaer has left his role at Old Trafford.

"Ole will always be a legend at Manchester United and it is with regret that we have reached this difficult decision,"the statement read. "While the past few weeks have been disappointing, they should not obscure all the work he has done over the past three years to rebuild the foundations for long-term success.

"Ole leaves with our sincerest thanks for his tireless efforts as Manager and our very best wishes for the future. His place in the club's history will always be secure, not just for his story as a player, but as a great man and a Manager who gave us many great moments.

"He will forever be welcome back at Old Trafford as part of the Manchester United family."
