One way to get the Brits on side is to praise one of their own, especially if it's Andy Murray.

That's what Nick Kyrgios was doing as he made his debut as a BBC pundit for Wimbledon in 2024.

He was sitting alongside commentator Nick Lester and Tim Henman for defending champion Carlos Alcaraz's first round match against Estonian Mark Lajal.

The Australian, who is still injured, was quick to praise Murray and spoke about just how tough it is to play against the two-time Wimbledon champion.

Kyrgios said: "I almost didn't like serving new balls against Andy Murray in his prime because you knew that if he got onto one of your 230 km/h serves [the ball] was coming back to your shoelaces."

He was then asked who was tougher to serve against, Murray or Novak Djokovic.

The 29-year-old said: "Andy gave me the treatment here. Honestly, I find it harder to serve against Murray than against Djokovic. I don't know why - it might be a respect thing as I just love Andy Murray. It's weird."

Henman then joked that was one way to get the viewers on side.

Kyrgios joining the BBC coverage at Wimbledon this year has caused plenty of controversy.

The broadcaster was forced to release a statement after a number of complaints.

“As a current and high profile player, Nick Kyrgios will provide insight and analysis of the action on the court from his experience in the game,” the BBC said.

“We are in no way condoning his cited previous actions or behaviours, on and off the court, and he is employed to share his views on tennis only. He has provided similar services to other major sports broadcasters in recent months.

“The legal process he was involved in has concluded, is well documented, and he has spoken about it publicly.”

Meanwhile, Murray is still scheduled to face Tomas Mahac in the first round of Wimbledon on Tuesday.

He had back surgery less than two weeks ago, but is trying to make it for one last appearance at the All England Club.
