Northern Ireland vs Italy as it happened at Windsor Park
Ian Baraclough's side earned a brilliant draw against the European champions on Monday night

Northern Ireland produced a brilliant performance to hold European champions Italy at Windsor Park.

Ian Baraclough's side earned a 0-0 draw against the Azzurri in Belfast to finish their World Cup qualifiers on a hugely positive note.

It could have been much better for Baraclough's men, with George Saville, Stuart Dallas and Conor Washington having chances to win the game.

Washington's was arguably the best, the striker beating Italian keeper Donarumma to the ball before bearing down on goal, he then cut onto his left foot before sending in a shot that was cleared off the line by Bonucci.

Earlier in the second half Dallas fired an effort just past the post, and Saville forced a decent save from Donarumma.

The Italians flattered to deceive in Belfast, rarely threatening Bailey Peacock-Farrell's goal.

The result - coupled with Switzerland's 4-0 win over Bulgaria - means the Swiss automatically qualify for Qatar 2022 by winning Group C.

Italy will now have to go through the play-offs, while Northern Ireland finished third in the table.
