Queen's Speech 2021: Monarch pays tribute to her 'beloved Philip' on first Christmas after his death

The Queen's Speech saw the monarch pay an emotional tribute to her 'beloved Philip' on the royal family's first Christmas after his death.
The Queen, who was not seen at church on Christmas Day, recalled her late husband's "sense of service, intellectual curiosity and capacity to squeeze fun out of any situation'.
Speaking of the late Duke of Edinburgh, she said: "He has quite simply been my strength and stay all these years and I and his whole family and this and many other countries owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim or we shall ever know.

"But for me in the months since the death of my beloved Philip, I have drawn great comfort from the warmth and affection of the many tributes to his life and work from around the country, the Commonwealth and the world.
"His sense of service, intellectual curiosity and capacity to squeeze fun out of any situation, were all irrepressible. That mischievous, enquiring twinkle was as bright at the end as when I first set eyes on him. But life, of course, consists of final partings as well as first meetings.

"And as much as I and my family miss him, I know he would want us to enjoy Christmas. We felt his presence as we, like millions around the world, readied ourselves for Christmas."
The 95-year-old monarch said she was 'beyond proud' of Philip, who she said was an 'early champion of taking seriously our stewardship of the environment'.
She also praised her eldest son Prince Charles for taking on his father's 'pioneering work' along with Prince William, supported by their wives Kate Middleton and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.
The Queen said: "I am proud beyond words that his pioneering work has been taken on and magnified by our eldest son Charles and his eldest son William - admirably supported by Camilla and Catherine - most recently at the COP climate change summit in Glasgow."
Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle were not mentioned by the monarch in today's speech.
This message marked the 69th year of the Queen's reign ahead of her historic Platinum Jubilee in 2022.
Traditionally, the Queen usually has several photos of her family on her desk. In previous years, her father King George VI has featured, as well as her great-grandchildren, Prince George and Princess Charlotte.
But this year, she opted for just a singular picture of her and her late husband from 2007. The couple were re-creating their famous honeymoon shot from 1947 which was taken at Broadlands in Hampshire.
