Scottie Scheffler shows true colours as historic Players win earns
Scottie Scheffler made Players Championship history on Sunday after becoming the first champion to win back-to-back, and in doing so earned comparisons to Tiger Woods

Scottie Scheffler was as modest as ever following his record-breaking victory at the Players Championship on Sunday, which earned him a comparison to the great Tiger Woods.

Scheffler wrote himself into the history books at TPC Sawgrass, becoming the first champion to win back-to-back Players titles after defending his crown in Florida. The world No. 1's win was all the more impressive after he was forced to battle through a neck injury, that almost saw him withdraw from the event during the second round.

Battling through the pain barrier over the weekend, the American showed exactly why he was the best on the planet, bursting through the pack to shoot a tournament-winning eight-under-par 64 in Sunday's final round.

In the aftermath Scheffler was questioned on how he felt being compared to the great Woods having matched his Masters tally. Humbly batting the idea down, he said: "Anytime you can be compared to Tiger I think is really special, but, I mean, the guy stands alone I think in our game. He really does.

"This is my eighth tournament win now out here and I've tied him in Players Championships. Outside of that, I got 14 more majors and 70-some PGA Tour events to catch up. I think I'm going to stick to my routine and just continue to plot along, try and stay as even-keeled as I can.

"We all idolise Tiger. He's been our guy. Watching what he did in special moments over the years is crazy to watch. I've learned a lot just from being around him. We're just very thankful that he's still a part of our sport." Scheffler's week could well have been over before the weekend on the back of his struggles last Friday.

Scottie Scheffler won the Players Championship on Sunday

The issue occurred during the second hole of his second round, where he was forced to receive treatment. from a masseuse on the following tee to treat the neck issue. Fortunately for the world No. 1 things improved on Saturday and Sunday, and he was thus able to make his move up the leaderboard from there.

Opening up on the injury, he said post-tournament: "I just think playing the back-to-back weeks is challenging. Being at the top of the leaderboard last week and this week, it's a real test mentally and physically. "This week was a physical test, as well, just with how my neck was Friday and Saturday.

"I put a lot into trying to win this golf tournament and it's very satisfying to be walking out of here with the trophy. I think that's why we put in all the work to be able to finish off tournaments and to play well at the right time. Going into days like today it's nice coming out on top, for sure. It's a great feeling."
