oday is the fourth annual Stephen Lawrence Day, and the 29th anniversary of Stephen Lawrence’s death.

Lawrence was murdered in 1993, at just 18 years old, in a racist attack in southeast London. His death sparked outrage and ignited conversations around racism and injustice in the UK.

His family established The Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation to “inspire a more equal, inclusive society, and to foster opportunities for marginalised young people in the UK,” according to the website, and National Stephen Lawrence Day was founded in his memory.

What is Stephen Lawrence Day?

Stephen Lawrence Day was founded in 2019 to celebrate his legacy and to raise awareness of racial inequality.

In 2019, Lawrence’s mother, Baroness Doreen Lawrence, wrote in The Guardian: “I hope that the first National Stephen Lawrence Day will help to drive forward an important national conversation about how we can all build a fairer and more inclusive Britain.

“But more importantly, I want this day to inspire our country’s future generation into living their best life – in the same spirit as Stephen.”
