Boxing Day will be a little different this year in retail, with many stores already confirming that they will stay shut on December 26.

The reason is to give staff more time to spend with families after a stressful year.

Stores including Home Bargains, Pets at Home and Wilko have all said they’ll be shut on Boxing Day.

But what about the supermarkets? We explain which ones are open and if there are reduced opening times in place.

If you are planning a trip to the supermarkets this week, you should note that coronavirus restrictions remain in place.

This means you need to wear face masks inside unless you’re exempt.

The supermarket will be closed on Boxing Day this year - just as it will be on Christmas Day too.

This means its doors won't reopen again until December 27 after Christmas Day.

Stores will typically be open from 8am until 8pm on December 27.

  • Christmas Eve: 7am - 6pm
  • Christmas Day: Closed
  • Boxing Day: Closed
  • December 27: 8am - 8pm

Asda stores will remain shut on Christmas Day, as they have done in previous years and in line with other retailers.

But it'll be back to business on Boxing Day - although opening times Christmas will vary across the country.

There isn't a set list of opening hours for each of its stores so you'll need to check its online store finder tool.

When The Mirror checked several locations, stores were listed to open from either 10am until 4pm or 11am until 5pm.

Opening times appear to be shortened on both December 27, with some shops welcoming customers from 8am until 8pm.

All Iceland shops will then be shut on Christmas Day and Boxing Day before reopening on December 27.

They'll then reopen on December 27 - but again, opening times are different for each store.

As it is a bank holiday, some Iceland stores are listed as opening 9am until 5pm and others are 8am until 8pm.

Use the Iceland store finder to check opening times of your nearest shop.

Lidl recommends that customers check the store locator as opening times vary across the country.

Christmas Day will then see all Lidl shops closed for business, before reopening on Boxing Day.

The Mirror checked several locations today, most stores were down to open from 10am until 4pm on December 26.

Then on December 27, most Lidl outlets will be open from the longer hours of 8am until 10pm.

Christmas Day and Boxing Day will see all M&S branches shut so staff can have a break.

Opening times are likely to be then shorter on December 27, with some branches running from 9am until 6pm.

To be sure of the opening times of your nearest M&S, use the store finder tool on its website.

Morrisons has handily listed its Christmas opening hours on its website for the majority of its England and Wales stores.

Again, you should use its store finder tool to check exact times of your local branch, and these hours don't take into account its Scotland branches.

Morrisons says its shops will be closed completely on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

December 27 will see most of its England and Wales branches open from 7am until 10pm.

Sainsbury's doesn't have a definitive list of store opening hours over Christmas, as its opening times will vary across the country.

The supermarket advises shoppers to use its store finder tool.

But it has confirmed that its shops will be closed on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day this year.

Larger stores are listing opening times of typically 8am until 8pm on December 27, while smaller Sainsbury's Local shops should be open from 7am until 10pm.

Tesco

Tesco also hasn't listed its Christmas opening hours on its website, as its operating hours do vary across the UK.

But Christmas Day will see all stores closed before they reopen again on Boxing Day.

Boxing Day hours will be shorter than normal, with large Tesco shops open from roughly 10am until 4pm or 11am until 5pm.

Tesco Express stores look set to be open from around 9am until 7pm, although again, this will vary.

On December 27, some larger Tesco shops will open from 8am until 6pm, while smaller shops should be welcoming customers from 6am until 11pm.

Waitrose has listed opening times for most of its stores online.

The posh retailer has confirmed its shops will be shut on both Christmas Day and Boxing Day.

The only exception is some branches in Welcome Break motorway service stations and Shell forecourts – some of which will be open 24 hours.

Then on December 27, some shops will be open from 8am until 6pm.
