8 Dorset holiday cottages that look like they should be in The Holiday
The 2006 romcom features a picture perfect English cottage which Cameron Diaz falls in love with - and Dorset is full of them

In the 2006 Christmas classic romcom The Holiday, lovelorn Kate Winslet swaps her country cottage for jilted Cameron Diaz’s LA mansion, falling head over heels for Jack Black.

Meanwhile, Diaz gets cozy with Jude Law in her British hideaway, with its acres of comfortable couches and woollen throws.

Sadly, the festive film’s Rosehill Cottage is an illusion – an amalgamation of English ideals seen through the eyes of American moviegoers.

Set designers built the exterior in a field, while the interiors were all constructed on Hollywood sound stages.

Nevertheless, there are plenty of Dorset holiday cottages which could have served as Winslet’s home.

Here are just a few of the most picturesque.

Rectory Cottage, near Bridport

From the outside, this converted coach house with its sandstone walls and slate-tiled roof could have existed just down the road from Winslet’s fictional farmhouse.

Inside, the property is a little brighter and more airy than the silver screen snug – although the exposed beams and chintz curtains are there.

The kitchen boasts all modern appliances, complemented by a rustic dining table, while the centrepiece to the lounge is a cosy-looking wood-fired stove.

With a patio for dining on lazy summer afternoons, this holiday home would be idyllic in any season.

Find it on Classic Cottages for a closer look and to book.

Char Cider Barn, Charmouth

Exposed beams, bare brickwork and a spiralling banister made from woven vines make this converted barn a winner for anyone seeking rural charm.

While its lounge and bedroom – which features a super-king size bed – look big and bright, they are tastefully appointed with stained wood and pastel colours.

Located on a small organic farm, this gorgeous getaway is just two miles from windswept walks on the Jurassic Coast.

And the promo photos show a wool blanket hung invitingly over the arm of a soft sofa – ideal for snuggling. Find it on Dorset Coastal Cottages for info and to book.

Jemma’s Cottage, Frome St Quintin

Beams, bath, cushions, rugs, throws – if these are the ingredients of a cottage fit for The Holiday, then this location has it all.

Small but perfectly formed, this charming property is just big enough for two. But it also has space – and an enormous lawn – for two dogs too, if you want to bring them along.

Cook a romantic meal for two in its microscopic kitchen before getting cosy on the couch to enjoy each other's company.

You can see it in full on Dorset Coastal Cottages. But don’t expect to visit until summer, as this popular spot is already booked up right through to May.

Halcyon Cottage, West Lulworth

The promotional pictures for this coastal retreat feature a huge stone fireplace and comfy-looking woollen throws, both staples of the fictional Rosehill Cottage in The Holiday.

The kitchen is painted in tasteful pastels right out of the Farrow & Ball catalogue (probably), with varnished wooden countertops and leaded glass cupboards.

The bathroom even features a bath in which to take a relaxing soak – just as Diaz does on her arrival from LA.

And the huge couch, with its surfeit of cushions, would be ideal for replicating her amorous advances on Law, if the mood strikes.

Externally, it’s a rural riot of sandstone and red brick. See it on Classic Cottages for more info and to book.

The Old Stable, Upwey

Whether you’re getting away by yourself or with a partner this tiny, tranquil hideaway is an ideal escape.

Set in an English country garden, the renovated stable block features a mezzanine bedroom above its one well-appointed living space, which combines a kitchen and lounge.

The former crams modern conveniences into a tiny galley, just inches from a huge Chesterfield-style sofa replete with cushions.

Before the couch are a floral rug and a wood-burning stove, which would doubtless warm this little space within minutes – on even the wintriest of days.

Find it on holidaycottages.co.uk to take a peek inside and book it for your next romantic getaway.

Spring View Cottage, Wool

This one merits inclusion purely for having a thatched roof, and for a garden path which crosses a babbling brook via a rustic wooden footbridge.

Inside, the property is more modern and spacious than Winslet’s little nook, making this more of a family holiday venue than one for a romantic getaway.

Located just a short walk from Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door, you can even bring your dog (for an additional £20 per night). See its Dorset Coastal Cottages listing for full details.

Dorset Nook, Bridport

Speaking of nooks, Bridport boasts this very aptly named venue too. Thatched roof? Check. Wood burning? Yes. Soft furnishings galore? You bet.

The kitchen looks rustic yet well stocked, with a gorgeous little terraced garden just beyond the kitchen window.

Climb the little wooden staircase and there’s an airy double bedroom at the top, plus an en-suite with that stone-flanked bathtub to wash your cares away.

There’s even a little utility room for doing the laundry – something Diaz never did on screen, but she must have done it at some point, right?

Find it on Dorset Coastal Cottages to book.

Lime Tree Stables, Winfrith Newburgh

“Make yourself at home,” urge the cushions stacked on this property’s ample sofa. And you will want to, as soon as you see this ivy-draped cottage down its tree-lined driveway.

The single bedroom makes a focal point of the stable’s oak beams, which stand out in contrast with its whitewashed stone walls.

And yes, there are heaps of throws and blankets around to ward off the winter weather. See it on holidaycottages.co.uk for more details and availability.
