Juergen Maurer has been one of the stars of the BBC drama Vienna Blood thanks to his portrayal of Oskar Rheinhardt. The latest series of Vienna Blood will hit our screens 9pm tonight (Sunday, August 4) with a new mystery for the detectives to unravel.

Matthew Beard and Juergen Maurer will reprise their roles as crime-fighting duo Doctor Max Liebermann and Detective Inspector Oskar Rheinhardt as they investigate a double murder of an arms dealer in police custody and a senior public official.

But a familiar face from series three will return and could be a pivotal character in the story - Therese Thanhofer. Therese is the former love interest of Oskar but off the camera, actress Maria Köstlinger is in a relationship with Juergen.

Here is what we know about her and their relationship together.

Who is Maria Köstlinger?

The Austrian actress was born in Stockholm, Sweden on July 6, 1972. Daughter of the tenor Josef Köstlinger and his Swedish wife Kerstin, she grew up in Salzburg, where the family moved to when Köstlinger was two years old.

Köstlinger enjoyed a respectable career in the theatre after she was first hired by the Salzburg State Theater in 1994. Since 1996, she has been a member of the ensemble of the Theater in der Josefstadt, where she made her debut in Barfuß im Park.

Maria has appeared in various TV shows including Spuren des Bösen – Schande, Vorstadtweiber, Tatort: Gier, Die Chefin and Vienna Blood.

In 2011, she was nominated for the Nestroy Theater Prize as best actress.

Köstlinger married the actor and director Karlheinz Hackl in 1997 and they had a daughter together. Karlheinz Hackl died on June 1, 2014.

How did Maria Köstlinger and Juergen Maurer meet?

Juergen Maurer was previously in a relationship with Sonja Romei, where they had a daughter and actress Mara Romei together.

Maria Köstlinger and Juergen Maurer first entered a relationship in 2016 and both actors appeared in Vorstadtweiber. After marking their love public at the time, they told the publication Krone: "Love is excellent. We are doing great, thank you. Yes, we love each other very much,"

Earlier this year, the pair appeared in Yasmin Reza's play James Brown Wore Curlers (James Brown trug Lockenwickler) which focuses on the parents of a boy called Jacob who has identified himself as Céline Dion since he was five. Jacob/Céline is now in a clinic.

On playing parents together, Maria Köstlinger said: “It's just really, really nice that we're getting the chance to play together. You're nervous, but you always are anyway.

“It is also particularly great that we are playing together for the first time at the Austrian premiere of Yasmina Reza’s play.”

Maria Köstlinger plays Therese Thanhofer who met Oskar in a chance encounter. Therese and Oskar began dating and were on a date to the "moving pictures" to see Queen of Carthage.

This was the moment Ida Rego, the film's leading lady, died on and off screen at the same time.

Towards the end of episode six, Oskar visits Therese’s home for a date. To his surprise, he finds another man at her home - Therese’s husband. A heartbroken Oskar leaves the home and curses his love life.

Discussing his role and how Therese will influence the plot, Juergen said: “Therese Thanhofer comes back into the story, having dumped him, at the end of Series 3. It’s exciting when she enters his life again, but it’s also going to cause trouble for him, specifically within the case, as she plays a key role in the plot.”
