Vimto fans warned 'do not drink' as bottles pulled from shelves

Vimto fans warned do not drink as bottles pulled from shelves
Certain Vimto products pose a potential health risk

Shoppers have been told not to drink certain bottles of Vimto due to a "potential risk to customers".

The Food Standards Agency [FSA] issues recalls for a variety of reasons, including when products contain allergens that are not disclosed on the packaging or if plastic is detected in the item. When a product is recalled, for any reason, the FSA shares details on what you should do if you have bought the item, as well as detailed information on why the item has been pulled from sale.

You can find the latest round up of product recalls (as of April 4) here. The well-known purple soft drink Vimto has recently been flagged as having issues.

A spokesperson for the FSA said: "Nichols plc is recalling Vimto Original 500ml due to bottles being labelled with a ‘No Added Sugar’ statement. The product within the bottles contains added sugar. This makes the product a potential risk to consumers who need to manage their sugar intake.

"Point of sale notices will be displayed in all retail stores that are selling these products. These notices explain to customers why the products are being recalled and tell them what to do if they have bought the products."

The warning was made over concerns of potential risk to customers who need to manage their sugar intake. The products being recalled have the following batch numbers: 4051, 4052, 4073, 4074, 4050, 4051, 4072 and 4073.

Telling customers exactly what they need to do, the spokesperson added: "If you have bought the above products and need to manage your sugar intake, please do not drink them. Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund."

Also, the FSA issued another recall on Friday for Viennetta Vanilla. The product's manufacturer Unilever reported this was because "milk and soya are not listed in English on the label". The FSA spokesperson said: "This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents and/or an allergy to soya. This is a result of a labelling error which means allergens and product information are in Spanish".

It was added that "this only affects products sold at Tesco stores in the UK". The product being recalled has the batch code L4031BC020.

If you have bought the above product and have an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents and/or an allergy to soya, do not eat it. Instead, contact the Unilever careline team for further guidance on 0800146252 or email ukicare@unilever.com.
