Barcelona flights cancelled as city placed on flooding red alert
Parts of Spain’s second largest airport under water

More than 80 flights were cancelled or delayed due to flooding in parts of the Barcelona’s El Prat airport.

The second largest airport in Spain was hit as Barcelona suffered flooding on Monday.

Spain’s state meteorological agency placed parts of Catalonia on red alert for torrential rain, with local media showing footage of cars partially submerged on a highway, while rail services were suspended.

The airport urged travellers check bus, metro or commuter lines as storms are causing delays, and to check the status of flights.

Search and rescue efforts are continuing following devastating flooding around Valencia last week leading to at least 217 deaths.

Local authorities in Valencia extended travel restrictions for an additional two days to help the work of emergency services as more than 74,000 people were affected over an area covering 216 square miles, according to local reports.

The Tui Care Foundation set up a fundraising appeal on Monday following devastation caused by the floods in Spain.

A separate Spain Flood Appeal by Intrepid Travel’s not-for-profit arm has raised almost $22,000 since being established last Friday.
