Comedian congratulates Dermot OLeary for bravely coming out as gay on This Morning
Comedian Barry Humphries - best known for playing Dame Edna Everage - was referring to ITV This Morning co-star Phillip Schofield coming out as gay when he congratulated Dermot O'Leary on his sexuality

Alison Hammond was in absolute hysterics on Friday's This Morning during an interview with Barry Humphries.

Barry, 87, joined Alison and her co-host Dermot O'Leary in the studio to discuss his upcoming tour The Man Behind The Mask.

However, the chat took a rather awkward turn when Barry got confused and thought Dermot was actually Phillip Schofield.

"Well I've got a very good memory Dermot, a very good memory, and incidentally I want to congratulate you by the way, seriously, on your courage," Barry told Dermot.

As Alison cracked up laughing, Barry continued: "Last year, no, no, when he came out and told us about his sexuality."

Alison's laugh got even louder and Barry looked rather confused as Dermot smirked.

"No, no, because I think a lot of people respected you for that," Barry added seriously, as Dermot replied: "Thank you, I'll pass that on to the gentleman who is here Monday to Thursday."

This confused Barry even more as Dermot joked: "Don't worry, your memory is crystal clear, thank you for your kind comments."

"And by the way, we're all in show business," Barry then commented as Alison tried to compose herself.

Of course, Barry was referring to when Phillip came out as gay live on This Morning in February 2020.

Later on in the interview, Barry brought it up again as he said: "The way we have to live Alison and Dermot, well you've discovered your path..."

"Yep, I've chosen mine, I'm very comfortable with it!" Dermot replied, as Barry commented: "Well, you've told us all about it."

Viewers tuning on on Friday found it hilarious too and took to Twitter to comment.

"Barry Humphries is f**king funny #thismorning," one person tweeted, while another commented: "Barry Humphries is an absolute legend don't forget to tell Phil Dermot #thismorning."

A third person added: "Barry is bloody hilarious #ThisMorning," while another asked: "Is Barry Humphries taking this p**s of did he actually mistake Dermot for Phil #thismorning."

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV and ITV Hub.
