Playing it safe: the development has announced some very familiar names

Battersea Power Station has announced the first eight restaurants and cafes set to open up inside the revamped, Grade II*-listed power station.

As part of the £9bn makeover, the site will welcome an array of popular high-street ventures. The best of these is arguably Le Bab, the popular kebab restaurant that’s also set to be part of the new Market Halls sites opening this year.

Gordon Ramsday’s Bread Street Kitchen is another high profile name; the mini-chain specialises in traditional British cooking, including beef Wellington and fish n’ chips, as well as steaks on the grill. Ramsay operates six others across the country, with three others alone in London.

The power station will also be home to what appears to be the UK’s only branch of Paris Baguette, a bakery-café. The South Korean group operate more than 4,000 sites globally.

Other big names joining include Starbucks, Joe & The Juice, and Europe’s biggest poke chain, Poke House. Where The Pancakes Are will open its third London site here, while Clean Kitchen Club will expand to their seventh.

While the news means those in the development will have some familiar names to choose from, the news is hardly likely to thrill, given that nothing here is a one-off. Visitors, too, may be disappointed to arrive and discover dishes they could eat across the captial and, in some cases, country.

Perhaps more exciting is news that a 20,000 sq ft food hall is to open in the former boiler room, though no details have been announced yet.

Meanwhile, ping-pong bar Bounce is to expand for the first time in seven years, with a new opening in turbine hall B, offering 11 gaming areas and a cocktail bar.

Sam Cotton, the head of leasing for Battersea Power Station Development Company, said:“Battersea Power Station has emerged as one of London’s leading food and drink destinations and this will only become stronger with the great mix of cafés, bars and restaurants opening inside the Power Station, creating thousands of new jobs for the immediate and wider local communities.

“We are delivering something incredibly unique for the capital and are confident visitors to Battersea Power Station will be excited by the variety of cuisines that will be on offer. We have an exciting year ahead of us as we countdown to the Power Station opening and further retail, leisure and dining concepts to announce, so watch this space!”
