A spokesman for Dorset Police said: "Following the initial response of officers at the scene, this matter is now in an investigative phase and a policing presence will remain in the vicinity as further enquiries are conducted and a number of cordons have been put in place."

Five ambulances were sent to Meyrick Road and Christchurch Road, by the bus stops, as well as two doctor’s car and three air ambulances.

Dorset Police said they were called to reports of a “disturbance” just before 3pm on Thursday, January 25 and sent around nine police cars along with some unmarked response units.

The spokeswoman added: "Officers can be approached by members of the public with any information or concerns and neighbourhood policing teams will be carrying out reassurance patrols in the area. "

"It's scary, really."

A large cordon was put up along Meyrick Road, including outside the Roundhouse Hotel, while officers carried out investigation work.

Officers were seen scouring around the bins and foliage.

Images taken from the scene show three men being detained by police officers.
