Arsenal closed to within six points of Premier League leaders Liverpool as they came from behind to beat Brentford 3-1.

Having been rocked by Bryan Mbeumo’s early goal, Mikel Arteta’s side very nearly went two behind when David Raya let Keane Lewis-Potter’s shot squirm through his fingertips. But the Spanish goalkeeper scrambled superbly to hook the ball off his own line, and barely 60 seconds later, Gabriel Jesus latched on to a rebound to nod home an equaliser.

Arsenal then took control with two goals in three minutes early in the second half, first Mikel Merino capitalising on some chaos from a corner and then Gabriel Martinelli producing a fine finish to convert youngster Ethan Nwaneri’s deflected cross. Three points lift the London club up above Nottingham Forest into second at the halfway stage of their season and start 2025 with an impressive win.

Arsenal show vital quality to surge to comeback victory over Brentford

Arsenal scored two goals in three second-half minutes to complete a 3-1 comeback victory at Brentford to move back up to second in the Premier League.

The Gunners were behind after just 13 minutes when Bryan Mbeumo struck for Brentford before David Raya nearly gift-wrapped the hosts a second when he allowed Keane Lewis-Potter’s shot to slip through his grasp.

Raya clawed the ball off his own line and one minute later Gabriel Jesus headed Arsenal back on level terms.

The win took Arsenal six points behind Liverpool – having played a game more – and ahead of Nottingham Forest. Brentford remain in 12th.

Gabriel Jesus speaks to TNT Sports after Arsenal beat Brentford

“I think the team did great today. To come here and play the way we played is amazing. Of course, the most important thing is the three points and we did it, but then the most important thing was how we reacted and we did it.”

“I keep working and everyone at the club can tell how I work every day, not just me but everyone. I don’t give up and it is not easy to play for a big club like Arsenal.

“Now I can score and I am very happy - I want to keep scoring to help the team.”

FT: Brentford 1-3 Arsenal

A shaky start from Arsenal, going behind in the first 15 minutes, but that’s an impressive win, in the end. In three second half minutes they took total control as Mikel Merino and Gabriel Martinelli struck - Brentford are beaten at home for just the second time this season as the visitors close to within six points of Liverpool, who do still have that game in hand.

A teasing ball just evades a diving Nathan Collins, surging forward from centre back in search of late life.

Martin Odegaard will be granted a little bit of rest. Jorginho takes the armband and his place in midfield.

A needless foul from Keane Lewis-Potter on Jurrien Timber, who had ventured down a blind alley towards his own corner flag. I’m never quite sure why forwards feel the need to do that, Lewis-Potter barging in the back of a player with no escape route.

Anyway, Jorginho will soon be amongst things to play what looks likely to be a victorious Arsenal coda.

A hurl into the box causes rather more stress for Arsenal, with David Raya in the end having to scurry to retrieve the ball before a Brentford leg can swing at it.

Brentford’s players and fans aren’t happy when their side are prevented from taking a free kick quickly after a foul from Myles Lewis-Skelly. Mark Flekken instead launches it long, and Thomas Partey watches it plummet on to his forehead.
