Tottenham battled their way to a morale-boosting 2-0 victory at Brentford to end their four-game losing streak in the Premier League and edge up to 14th in the table.

It was far from pretty, with Ange Postecoglou's side profiting from a messy Vitaly Janelt own goal and then dropping deep in the second half to repel a barrage of crosses from their hosts before Pape Sarr raced onto Heung-Min Son's pass to seal the victory on the counter.

BRENTFORD OWN GOAL.
Brentford's Vitaly Janelt scores an own goal to put Spurs ahead.

But after such a miserable run in the league, Spurs' injury-hit squad will head back to north London satisfied to take three points and head into their all-important Carabao Cup semi-final second leg at Liverpool on Thursday in positive mood.

Postecoglou appeared to prioritise that cup tie by leaving Micky van de Ven out of his squad on Sunday - and his Spurs side are likely to be called on to do even more defending at Anfield. They did well at the Gtech, though, largely limiting Brentford to half-chances - although Yoane Wissa should have converted from close range when he flicked the ball over the bar.

WISSA CHANCE.
Yoane Wissa misses golden chance to level for Brentford against Tottenham Hotspur!

Brentford's fortress has been conquered more than usual in recent weeks - they are now winless in six at home across all competitions - and Thomas Frank will be left reflecting on how his side failed to make long spells in Spurs' final third count. Thirty-seven crosses, 48 touches in the box and 2.29xG added up to nothing.

Brentford's unwanted record

Brentford had 20 shots and 2.29 xG against Tottenham today – both of which are their highest totals in a Premier League game where they failed to score.

They were ultimately undone by a defensive set-piece, though, with Iceland goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson, making his first Premier League start in place of the injured Mark Flekken, crowded out as Son whipped in the dangerous cross. Sky Sports' Jamie Carragher labelled the 'keeper's positioning 'a recipe for disaster' and it stung the Bees before Sarr rubbed salt in the wounds.

SPURS SCORE A SECOND.
Pape Matar Sarr's finish secured Spurs' victory at Brentford.

Carra: Credit to Spurs' defence

Sky Sports' Jamie Carragher:

"To go to Brentford with the back four they had, I couldn't see any way Tottenham could win this game and keep a clean sheet.

"There were so many crosses coming into the box, you have to give credit to the goalkeeper and the back four."

Postecoglou: An important win in the context of our season

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou:

"Difficult place to come, difficult place to win at and difficult place to keep them out. The way they play you have to defend your box: throw-ins, set-pieces, crosses, you have to do that irrespective of how you tactically want to play. The lads were brilliant. Our second goal was outstanding and we were always a threat when we had it.

"I was super pleased [the players] could share that moment with the supporters. In the context of the season it is an important one. People can dismiss it but playing Thursday-Sunday without being able to rotate takes its toll. We're meeting teams who have had seven days break and we've had 48 hours sometimes."

What happened to Angeball? "It's very difficult for a group of players to play Thursday-Sunday and maintain energy levels. They're giving maximum effort. That means you can't be sharp with and without the ball. They're humans not robots. I know the reality.

"It wasn't a game we could go out and dominate. Brentford had a week to prepare for this, we had 50-something hours. In that context the performance was outstanding."

Frank: A missed opportunity

Brentford boss Thomas Frank:

"It definitely felt like a missed opportunity. We did a lot of things right. But this is football and in football even if you do a lot of things right it doesn't mean you're going to win the game. If we look at what we did well, we created a lot of good situations, more than 30 crosses...

"When we didn't get an away win, it was all about consistent performances. It was just about getting three points. We solved that, now the home form. We should have got more out of this game. We created more than enough to get an equaliser, and then they score at the end."
