Burnley vs Watford live: Score and goal updates as both sides seek breakthrough
In perhaps the biggest game of the season so far, Burnley failed to deliver a performance that suggests they have the ability to beat the drop this season.
The Clarets had positive spells in their crunch clash with Watford but in truth it was hard to foresee a goal.
The 0-0 draw does little for either side’s survival chances but the visitors, under the management of Roy Hodgson for the first time, will be the happier given they secured a first clean sheet of the campaign.
For Burnley, it is now a home double header against Manchester United and Liverpool and the Clarets have to find a way of winning and find it quick to have a chance of extending their current Premier League stay into a seventh season.
Sean Dyche handed a debut to new signing Wout Weghorst, paired with the returning Maxwel Cornet up front, but both were perhaps understandably a tad off the pace.
The latter forced two saves from Ben Foster, one in either half, but struggled to get into the contest, while Weghorst saw a heavily deflected shot hit the bar in a workmanlike performance that offered promise for the future.
But it’s the here and now where Burnley need something and they couldn’t find it against an organised Watford who merited a point.
The Hornets had chances of their own, albeit most were comfortable for Nick Pope, while Burnley again struggled with creativity.
The introduction of Jay Rodriguez injected some urgency into the final quarter and Burnley certainly tried to find a way through but for all their purpose they lacked the productivity to open up the visiting defence.
