Call the Midwife's Matthew, played by Olly Rix, faces an emotional surprise as the BBC series nears the end.

The show was postponed due to the Bafta’s Film Awards taking place on Sunday, 18 February, seeing Call the Midwife forced to change its regular schedule.

However, now the BBC drama set in Poplar is back ready to air its last two episodes of series 13 but it's set to take an emotional turn for a pivotal character.

Series 13 of Call the Midwife has seen fan favourite Matthew (Olly Rix) face financial issues and martial woes with Trixie (Helen George), and now things are only set to get worse for the pair.

As all of the midwives are ready to head out for their duties leaving Nonnatus House, Matthew spots a man standing next to his car writing on a clipboard.

Confused, he walks over asking if he can help only to be told that the car belongs to Alyward Estates and “they want it back”, sharing he is a bailiff leaving Matthew with no choice but to hand over the car.

Fans of Call the Midwife have been concerned for Matthew since he began struggling with the family business and the debt left behind by his late father.

The character's troubles come after rumours that actor Olly Rix will be leaving at the end of series 13 of the BBC show.

Previously Speaking to OK! at the premiere of George’s The King And I musical, Rix said: “It’s great being part of the Call the Midwife family. For now.

Back in September 2023, reports suggested that Rix was told by scriptwriters that his character, Matthew Aylward, would be written out of the show.

According to The Sun, a source from Call the Midwife said: "The news of Olly’s departure has left the cast and crew stunned and upset.”

Call the Midwife returns to BBC One on Sunday at 8pm.
