Call The Midwife fans heartbroken as Trixie and Matthew Aylward torn apart
Fans of the popular BBC drama Call The Midwife were left begging for a “happy ending” after watching Trixie Aylward's, played by Helen George, fairytale relationship begin to crumble. On the episode on Sunday, 25 February, viewers watched as her husband Matthew, played by Olly Rix, was caught in a web of lies after facing some serious money troubles which he struggled to keep hidden when bailiffs arrived at Nonnatus House to take his car away.
As a result of the stressful situation, Trixie then attempted to cope with things by accepting sleeping pills from Doctor Turner, played by Stephen McGann. Though viewers will know that Trixie isn’t the most domesticated woman out there, she was eager to make their frugal lifestyle work as they coped with having little money and even mastered the art of making tasty mince dishes to fit their budget.

But Matthew wasn't ready for the change in the lifestyle that was required and instead announced that he was heading to New York for a business venture with a mate. Though he begged Trixie to go with him, she refused and in tear-jerking scenes she bid farewell to her husband and stepson Jonty.
The surprise turn in the pair's love story didn't sit well with viewers who took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their sorrow at the twist in events. One person wrote: “I'm not prepared for the end of Matthew and Trixie #CallTheMidwife." Kara posted: "Not Trixie crying... I was not prepared for this on a Sunday evening.”
A second social media user wrote: “They could of let Matthew and Trixie bow out happily but them turning Matthew into a t**t grinds me so much, she doesn't deserve this just let my girl be HAPPY.”
Meanwhile, a third added: “Trixie and Matthew are so vexing this series. Going against almost everything in their character development for the last 3 seasons and is contradictory from one episode to the next #CallTheMidwife.”
And a fourth simply said: “Matthew was supposed to be Trixie’s happy ending. Why are they doing this to us #CallTheMidwife”. In other parts of the show, Joyce Highland's, played by Renee Bailey, secrets were revealed when a man who said he was her cousin showed up, but he turned out to be the husband she had escaped from.
Elsewhere, Rosalind Clifford, played by Natalie Quarry, had to handle a tough situation with a young lady who had been hurt by her stepdad and was now expecting a baby.
