Call The Midwife fans were left in tears just minutes into the BBC drama's Christmas Day special as they were left fearing for Reggie after he went missing

Call The Midwife graced TV screens with the opening half of an extended Christmas special on BBC One. In this festive installment, fans welcomed back Helen George, who reprised her role as Trixie Franklin and took part in Nonnatus House's holiday celebrations.

Cliff Parisi, playing Fred Buckle, donned the Santa costume to distribute presents to youngsters in the hospital over Yuletide.

The episode also unfolded drama for Reggie (played by Daniel Laurie), who was left anticipating a ride home from Fred. However, traffic delays caused by a prison escape led to Reggie being marooned at the coach station.

When Fred finally arrived, he learned that Reggie had attempted to make his own way home but ended up lost far from Poplar, which caused great concern.

Emotions ran high amongst viewers with some taking to X, originally known as Twitter, to express their distress within moments of the programme starting. @sophemma_xoxo expressed: "Reggie has me going already and it's only been four minutes #CallTheMidwife", paired with a tearful emoji, reports the Express.

Another viewer, @DebbieBlackma14 tweeted: "Six minutes in and they already have me terrified for Teddy and crying over Reggie #CallTheMidwife."

Teddy's storyline involved him battling a curable illness in the hospital.

@MissRudiBlue's tweet showed readiness for action, saying: "Why is Teddy in hospital? If something happens to him, I will RIOT! Same for Reggie."

As the episode continued, concern for Reggie's welfare only intensified among the show's audience.

@Andy_Lea777 tweeted: "If anything, yes, anything happens to Reggie. There will be hell to pay."

@Emmie_jh shared her sentiments, tweeting: "If any harm comes to Reggie I will be fuming #callthemidwife."

@mia_isabellex couldn't contain her concern, posting: "REGGIE IS LOST NO SHUT UP #CalltheMidwife".

The storyline unfolds further on Boxing Day at 7.30pm with a synopsis that teases: "The People of Poplar Choir performance brings festive cheer and romance is in the air for Nancy when she is asked out by Roger Noble."

The plot thickens as, "They agree to go to the funfair, but a sudden accident brings their date to an abrupt end before Nancy has had a chance to address the fact she is a single mother."

Meanwhile, "As concern grows for missing Reggie, the residents pull together to try to find him, while escaped prisoner Jock McKechnie has a personal reason for being in Poplar - only for events to escalate when he injures his hand."

Audiences must anxiously wait to learn of Reggie's fate.
