Cambridge United midfielder Adam May pleased to avoid FA Cup replay with Exeter City Cambridgeshire Live

Adam May was pleased to see Cambridge United avoid an FA Cup replay against Exeter City owing to his side’s busy fixture schedule.

The U’s have had a hectic fixture list in recent weeks, having played seven Tuesday games on the bounce.

United will face their eighth midweek game in a row tomorrow evening when they travel to face Cheltenham Town, their last in the recent run.

Mark Bonner’s side were set to head back to St James Park next Tuesday until Harvey Knibbs popped up with an 87th minute winner to secure United’s third round place with a 2-1 victory.

Saturday’s trip to Charlton Athletic will now represent the end of their busy schedule, with a week off following this weekend’s game.

“I thought they caused us a lot of problems. At the same time, we had a lot of chances as well. It was a very end to end match. We’re just delighted to come through it in the end,” May reflected on the Exeter win.

“As a team we knew we needed to be a little bit better. There were too many turnovers and chances in our box. The main thing was we’ve come out with the win, and it’s always nice to score late.

“They’re a good side, they’ve shown that with their recent form. They had a lot of chances, on another day they might have got a few more, but luckily it’s gone our way.

“We definitely didn’t want a replay up there. Thankfully we got through it with a busy schedule.

“It’ll be nice to have a little break in the week, and get back to training and working hard, and we look forward to the third round now.”

Having trailed early on at the Abbey, May brought the U’s level midway through the first half with a left-footed strike from the edge of the box.

The strike was his fourth goal of the campaign, taking him past last season’s tally of three strikes.

May admits that goalscoring is an area that he is always looking to improve upon.

“I just try and time my runs well. I know that when we get wide, the cutback’s always on, so I just try and make the edge of the box and back up the play. Luckily a few have fallen to me lately, and I’ve put them away,” the midfielder added.

“I’d liked to have had a few more, but they’re slowly coming. It’s something I’ve always wanted to add to my game a little bit more, so hopefully I can keep it up.

“As long as I can keep adding the goals to my game, whether they’re from distance or close range, I won’t say no.”
