Soap star Carol Royle has revealed her husband of 47 years has died suddenly following a freak accident.

The 70-year-old actress - who appeared in ITV soap Crossroads - joined Coronation Street over the summer as new character Anthea Deering.

Royle married musician Julian Spear, son of Yentl and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang actor Bernard Spear, in 1977.

They went on to welcome two children together, Taran and Talitha.

How did Carol Royle’s husband die?

Taking to social media on Monday, Royle confirmed his passing, saying he suffered a "sudden massive brain haemorrhage".

Alongside a family picture, the grief-stricken star penned: "I am desperately sorry to post that we lost my wonderful husband, Julian Spear, today, 9th December.

"Perfectly fit man but jumped into a freezing outdoor pool which he assumed was heated as per usual yesterday, and he developed a sudden massive brain haemorrhage – our hearts are aching."

She added: "Married 47 years – known each other 56. Forgive me if I am not on Facebook very much for a while."

Her friends and fans were quick to offer their condolences in the comments section.

“There are simply no words to describe the pain I feel for you all,” wrote one person. “It was an absolute honour to know Julian. The most beautiful, loving family I have the privilege of knowing. I love you all deeply and am sending every ounce of love and strength,” they added, followed by a red love heart emoji.

Another replied: “Oh Carol, I'm so sorry, he was the best man. My heart is with you and the family.”

“OMG Carol, I’m so sorry, this is utterly shocking. Sending all my love to you and Tally and Taryn. I just can’t believe it,” added another.

Royle’s other acting credits include Jenny Russell in the BBC Sitcom Life Without George and Lady Patricia Brewster in four episodes of Heartbeat.

She also appeared in multiple episodes of Casualty, Doctors and The Bill, playing different characters in various episodes of all three shows.
