The Welsh star has become a popular TV personality

However, when she met them, she had two marriages behind her.

In 1985 she got married at the age of 24 to her first husband Christopher Mather who was an international rugby league player. The marriage lasted a year and the couple divorced in 1986.

Since the split Carol has spoken on her BBC Radio Wales radio show about their relationship, revealing the marriage was rocky, with the couple splitting up and then getting back together many times.

She remarried in 1990, at the age of 29, to Patrick King, a management consultant and the couple had two children together, Katie and Cameron.

Carol was married to Patrick for 10 years before they divorced in 2000 and although Carol has never publicly spoken about why they split she has said she regrets the divorce.

The TV star also said that had her career not grown so much she would likely still be married to Patrick and that now Patrick has remarried there is no chance of them getting back together.

Carol's daughter Katie has followed in her mum's scientific footsteps graduating with a PhD in nanotechnology and works for the educational platform Tech She Can.

Her son, Cameron, has recently graduated with a master's degree after being diagnosed with severe educational needs when he was younger causing him to struggle while in school. Cameron and Carol appeared on This Morning in October 2021 to talk about his educational journey.

Carol, who is now 61, has said that she is very happy remaining single and that although she is dating she doesn't think she will marry again.

She has said she doesn't need to be in a relationship to be happy and that she can't imagine sharing her life with anyone.

The presenter, from Prestatyn, grew up with her mother, Edwina, and siblings after a then pregant Edwina Carol's father when she found out he was having an affair with a 16-year-old.

She was one of the youngest women ever admitted to the University of Cambridge in 1978 and she graduated with a third-class degree in engineering.

It was her maths and science knowledge that helped her secure her job on Countdown. After 26 years on Countdown Carol left the show and in 2008 she joined the Loose Women panel for two years. Since 1999 she has presented the Pride of Britain Awards and was joined by a co-presenter, Ashly Banjo, in 2021 for the first time.

Carol - who is appearing on ITV's Beat the Chasers on Tuesday, January 11 - has also taken part in Strictly Come Dancing in 2006 and I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! in 2016. In 2020 she won The Great Stand Up to Cancer Bake Off and has been learning Welsh with the help of Welsh BBC weather presenter Owain Wyn Evans.

She runs her own maths teaching website The Maths Factor and has released maths books and teaching books. Recently she has sold her 2.6 million home in Bristol and says that one day she will move to Wales permanently.
